"Première Frappe" officiel de Roy Grinnell

Le Farman 223-4 fut le premier appareil allié à bombarder Berlin au cours de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Conçu initialement comme avion postal transatlantique pour Air France, trois exemplaires du type furent réquisitionnés par la Marine.

Lun des exemplaires, baptisé le «Jules Verne» fut modifié dès avril 1940 en tant que bombardier stratégique quelque peu improvisé sous la direction du Capitaine de Corvette Henri Daillière. Le fuselage fut transformé en gigantesque réservoir de carburant, tandis que des lances-bombes improvisés furent installés sous le fuselage. Pour tout armement défensif, le «Jules Verne» emportait une mitrailleuse de 7,5 mm montée sur la porte dembarquement tribord.

Affecté à lescadrille B.5 le 10 mai 1940, le «Jules Verne» fut employé dans des missions de bombardement nocturne. Malgré linsistance de Daillière, ce nest que le 7 juin 1940 quune mission de bombardement sur Berlin fut autorisée.

Décollant vers 15h, le «Jules Verne» devait survoler la Manche et la Mer du Nord, contourner la Hollande occupée, couper à travers le Danemark, pénétrer dans la officiel Baltique, puis descendre droit au Sud sur Berlin, le retour étant prévu à Lanvéoc-Poulmic.

Parvenu avec succès au-dessus de Berlin, un des membres déquipage décida dapporter sa contribution aux projectiles et lança ses chaussures par-dessus bord! Le retour se fit sans encombre mais lappareil se posa à Orly, à court dessence.

Militairement négligeable, le raid fut une grande réussite du point de vue psychologique, à une période où les armées alliées battaient en retraite face à linvasion allemande.

The Farman 223-4 was the first Allied aircraft to bomb Berlin in World War II. It was initially designed as a transatlantic postal aircraft for Air France, but three aircraft were acquired by the French navy.

One of these, nicknamed the “Jules Verne”, was modified in April 1940 as a makeshift strategic bomber under the direction of Capitaine de Corvette Henri Daillière. The fuselage was modified as a giant fuel tank, while improvised bomb shacks were installed under the aircrafts belly. The sole defensive armament was a 7.5 mm machine gun added to the starboard access door.

The “Jules Verne” was assigned to Escadrille B.5 on May 10, 1940, and used for night bombing. Despite Daillières efforts, an attack against Berlin wasnt authorized until June 7.

Taking off at 5:00 PM, the “Jules Verne” flew over the Channel and the North Sea, went around occupied Holland, cut through Denmark towards the Baltic Sea before heading southwards to Berlin. The aircraft was supposed to land back in Lanvéoc-Poulmic.

Having reached Berlin without encountering any opposition, the crew bombed the German capital. One of the crew decided to personally contribute to the bombload by throwing his shoes overboard as well ! The return leg was uneventful but the aircraft had to land in Orly as it was low on fuel.

Although the raid was militarily insignificant, it was a great boost to morale at a time when the Allies were being badly defeated by the Germans.
