Alan DAVIE, "Drawings - Basel 69", 1969. Catalogue dexposition.

Petit in-4° oblong (23,5 X 20 cm), 10 feuillets pliés imprimés N&B (texte et dessins) sous chemise cartonnée orange illustrée, non-paginé (40 pages).

Edition numérotée : tirage limité à 1500 copies numérotées de 1 à 500, les 100 premières étant signées par lartiste. Ici : numéro 288 (sans signature).

Rédigé en anglais.

Catalogue de dessins N&B réalisé par Alan DAVIE pour le Musée de Basel (Basel Kunstmuseum), à loccasion de lexposition de ses dessins daoût à octobre 1969.

Bon état : une brunissure (une bande de 5 mm en haut du premier feuillet), rhodoïd fendu en deux(rhodoïd léger, très fin).

James Alan DAVIEest unpeintre et musicien de jazz anglais (1920-2014).

Influencé par le Zen et les théories de JUNG, il ressent que tout chemin spirituel est incompatible avec une planification de l'œuvre et cherche à peindre le plus automatiquement possible.À la manière de POLLOCK, qu'il a rencontré peu de temps avant sa mort, DAVIE réalise de nombreuses œuvres au sol. Il réalise souvent plusieurs tableaux en même temps et proclame que ces images ne sont pas de pures abstractions mais un ensemble de signes et de symboles. Son langage est fondé sur l'observation du fait que cultures différentes – occidentales, primitives, orientales, etc. — ont des symboles visuels communs. Se voulant primitif, il conçoit le rôle de l'artiste comme celui d'un shaman.

Son travail prolifique se caractérise par un mélange de pictogrammes, de symboles connus et de nouveaux inventés sous son coup de brosse. Ses peintures apparaissent à la fois apocalyptiques et triomphantes. Dans ses conférences, il insiste sur l'importance de l'improvisation comme méthode de travail et soutient que seule une inspiration surnaturelle peut résister à la normalisation d'une civilisation rationnelle.
