Chaque matin, dans le café où elle prend son petit déjeuner, l'éditrice madrilène María Dolz observe un couple qui, par sa complicité et sa gaieté, irradie d'un tel bonheur qu'elle attend avec impatience, jour après jour, le moment d'assister en secret à ce spectacle rare et réconfortant. Or, l'été passe et, à la rentrée suivante, le couple n'est plus là. María apprend alors qu'un malheur est arrivé.

Le mari, Miguel Desvern, riche héritier d'une compagnie de production cinématographique, a été sauvagement assassiné dans la rue par un déséquilibré. Très émue, elle décide de sortir de son anonymat et d'entrer en contact avec sa femme, Luisa, qui est devenue un être fragile, comme anesthésié par la tragédie.

Dans l'entourage de Luisa, María rencontre Javier Díaz-Varela, le meilleur ami de Miguel, et elle comprend vite que les liens que cet homme tisse avec la jeune veuve ne sont pas sans ambiguïté. Bien au contraire : cette relation jette une ombre troublante sur le passé du couple, sur la disparition de Miguel, sur l'avenir de Luisa et même sur celui de María.

Servie par une prose magistrale, habile à sonder les profondeurs de l'âme humaine mais aussi à tenir son lecteur en haleine, cette fable morale sur l'amour et la mort ne peut que nous rappeler, par son intensité, les meilleures pages d'Un cœur si blanc ou de Demain dans la bataille pense à moi.

Comme par le passé, Javier Marías y dialogue avec les tragédies de Shakespeare mais également avec Le Colonel Chabert de Balzac dont il nous offre ici une lecture brillante, complètement inattendue et strictement contemporaine.
