The Hand of the Potter by Theodore Dreiser
Condition: VG++/VG+
Published in 1918 by Boni & Liveright in New York. First edition, first printing, first state binding, second state text. In original 1/4 natural linen over light green paper covered boards with dark green lettering and a paper spine label. Green endpapers. Publisher's top stain. Octavo, 209 pages. With original dust jacket and $1.25 Net on spine.
The Hand of the Potter is Dreiser's only published play. It is a controversial "realistic" drama about a murderous sexual deviant with no power to alter his character or destiny. "Did the hand then of the potter shake?"
Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (August 27, 1871 – December 28, 1945) was an American novelist and journalist of the naturalist school. His novels often featured main characters who succeeded at their objectives despite a lack of a firm moral code, and literary situations that more closely resemble studies of nature than tales of choice and agency.
Renowned mid-century literary critic Irving Howe spoke of Dreiser as ranking "among the American giants, the very few American giants we have had."
