Karl Hofner 1/2 Violin Czech made.. w/ case no bow..

no cracks or repairs i can see

over all length is 20"
body length is 11 7/8"
upper bout is 5 1/2"
lower bout is 6 3/4"

A nice early high quality hand made Karl Hofner 1/2 Violin. This violin was made in the town of Schonbach during the period between WWI and WWII. The town itself was at various times part of Austria, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. History buffs will argue why the winner gets to call the city and state whatever it wants, but suffice to say that this town was known as the "Austrian Cremona" and during the time of this violins manufacture...the state was Germany. Made in the Germany (later Czechoslovakia) in Schonbach between 1938 and 1947. Measures 20 1/4 inches long. .An explanation about the date and country of manufacture of the violin: Shonbach is a City in Czechoslovakia now called Luby. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918 after which time it called itself Czechoslovakia and any violins made there during that period might be labelled Czech. In 1938 Schonbach became part of Germany until after WWII. After WWII in 1946 the town changed its name to Luby, Czechoslovakia. Labels for Hofner during the German controlled time period have the diamond shaped logo above the half world. Within the diamond is a violin and the KH initials. Label also reads "Copy of Antonius StradivariusFaciebat Cremona 1713 Made in Germany" When Hofner moved the factory to Babenruth it was in "West Germany" and labels read "West Germany" after WWII. You will find many Hofner violins after 1960 but very few this age (pre WWII) and quality. This is a German/Czech copy of a Strad. One could argue either Country of manufacture. Regardless, it is the type, and time period Hofner that is of the higher quality than the ones made after WWII and of much more serious player interest.
