These six titles are reissues of six historic modern jazz albums recorded by the great Rudy Van Gelder during the active period of analog stereo recording from 1961 to 1965.
The label “Impulse” is one that accurately depicts the jazz scene of the turbulent early 1960s.
It was launched in 1961 as a jazz label under the major American label ABC Paramount, with the slogan “The New Wave of Jazz”, and was actively involved in cutting-edge performances by John Coltrane and others who stormed through the 1960s like a hurricane.

There are four wind instruments.

On this disc, Count Basie adopts a combo format of 1 trumpet, 2 saxophones and a rhythm section, rather than his usual large-scale orchestra.

The man who graces the final track of this box set is, of course, Coltrane.
And the fact that Coltranes tenor saxophone conveys the excellence of the music as he performs a duo with Hartman is a triumph of the project, and a rare work even in jazz history.
The opening song, “They Say Its Wonderful”, and the third song, “My One and Only Love”, are vocal works that will be listened to for the next half century, or a total of 100 years.
