Objet rare pour collectionneur dinstruments de navigation.
Appelé aussi Pelorus, Ships bearing plate, instrument de relèvement de gisement, cest-à-dire de l'angle que fait laxe du navire avec un amer (phare, point remarquable sur la carte), un autre navire afin de vérifier s'il y a route de collision ou pas, ou bien un astre avec détermination de l'azimut.
Cet instrument est numéroté 16 donc parmi les tous premiers du fabricant. Un faible nombre d'instruments ont du être utilisés, car remplacés par le « taximètre » appelé aussi « alidade », cercle de relèvement placé directement sur le compas magnétique.
Dans sa boite acajou fermée par crochets, il y a une boucle pour une sangle de transport manquante, une fente sur le couvercle.
En laiton « oxydé », procédé chimique pour noircir le laiton, bien plus durable dans le temps que la peinture.
Le disque central est en laiton argenté. Il possède un contre poids et il est « à la cardan » de manière à assurer une certaine stabilité horizontale malgré les mouvements du navire.
En très bon état, très légères petites traces d'usure laissant voir le laiton sur la couronne de relèvement.
